About This Calculator

How It Works

BMI compares your weight to your height to produce a single number used as a rough proxy for body fat. It's the most widely used screening tool in general healthcare because it's fast, free, and doesn't require special equipment โ€” just a scale and a tape measure. The formula divides your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters, then maps the result onto four standard categories. Doctors use it as a starting point, not an endpoint.

The Formula

BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)ยฒ or BMI = 703 ร— weight(lb) / height(in)ยฒ

When to Use This

BMI is most useful for tracking trends over time or getting a general sense of where you stand relative to population averages. It's a reasonable first check before a doctor's visit, or for noticing gradual changes in your weight over months or years. If your BMI is well within the normal range, you can take that as broadly reassuring. If it's at an extreme, it's worth a conversation with a healthcare provider โ€” not a panic.

Limitations

BMI can't tell the difference between muscle and fat, so athletes and very muscular people often show as 'overweight' despite low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is distributed on the body โ€” visceral fat (around the organs) carries more health risk than subcutaneous fat โ€” nor does it adjust meaningfully for age, sex, or ethnicity, all of which affect what's actually healthy for a given individual.

Example

A person 5'9" (175cm) weighing 160 lbs (72.5kg) has a BMI of 23.7 โ€” in the 'Normal weight' range. But BMI doesn't know if you're a bodybuilder, so take it with a grain of salt.

Did You Know?

BMI was invented in the 1830s by a Belgian mathematician, Adolphe Quetelet. He literally never intended it to be used as an individual health measure โ€” it was meant for studying populations. Science has a way of outliving its original intent.

Want to Track Your BMI Over Time?

A BMI calculation gives you a useful snapshot โ€” but a single number on its own doesn't tell you much. What actually matters is the trend: is your BMI moving in the right direction over weeks and months?

That's where a smart scale earns its place. Unlike a regular bathroom scale, a smart scale measures not just your weight but body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone density, hydration, and BMI โ€” automatically, every time you step on it โ€” and logs everything in a connected app so you can see your progress over time without manually tracking anything.

Our pick for most people: the RENPHO Smart Scale (Elis 1)

The RENPHO Elis 1 is the #1 bestselling body composition monitor on Amazon โ€” and it's easy to see why. It tracks 13 body metrics including BMI, body fat percentage, and muscle mass, syncs automatically via Bluetooth to a free app compatible with Apple Health, Samsung Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit, and gives you a clear visual trend of how your numbers are changing over weeks and months. Trusted by over 20 million users worldwide and recommended by the Today Show and PCMag. Under $25 โ€” one of the best-value health tracking tools available anywhere.

If you just checked your BMI and want to track it consistently going forward, this is the most friction-free way to do it.
