About This Calculator

How It Works

You enter how many loads of laundry you do per week, your personal sock loss rate per load, and the calculator projects your annual sock deficit and the real financial cost of replacing them. The loss rate is user-defined because every household has a different relationship with the dryer. The formula is simple multiplication. The results are somehow always more depressing than expected.

The Formula

Lost socks/year = loads_per_week ร— 52 ร— loss_rate_per_load. Loss rate is user-defined (0.1 to 2 socks/load).

When to Use This

Use this when you want to justify buying socks in bulk, when you need hard data to win an argument about whether someone is losing socks at an unreasonable rate, or when you simply want to face the numerical reality of laundry entropy. The financial cost section is particularly useful for people who have never thought about how much sock replacement quietly costs per year.

Example

3 loads/week at 0.3 socks lost per load = 46.8 socks per year. At $3/pair, that's $70/year of sock entropy. RIP.

Did You Know?

Britons lose an average of 1.3 socks per month, according to a 2016 study commissioned by Samsung (yes, really). Over a lifetime, that's over 1,000 socks. Gone. Where do they go? Nobody knows.
